Title: The LUTETIAN SOCIETY EDITION, Complete in 12 volumes, 1894-1895
Description: London, Regnery / Longmans, 1894. 0 pp. Hardcover. 6 works in 12 volumes. Copy no.97 of 300 sets on hand-made paper (there were also 10 on [Japanese] vellum). L'assommoir translated by Arthur Symons (with preface by Zola, dated 1877); Germinal by Havelock Ellis; Pot-bouille by Percy Pinkerton; Nana by Victor Plarr; La cure?e by A. Teixeira de Mattos; La terre by Ernest Dowson.*** A note in L'Assomoir states: "this series is the only complete, unexpurgated, and absolutely literal edition of M. Zola's novels as yet printed in the English tongue, and it is issued by the special permission and under the direct auspices of M. Zola". The set was published at the high price of 12 GBP (see Denise Merkle 'The Lutetian Society', online at erudit.org). All in original dark blue cloth gilt; top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Mild foxing in text (heavier on the deckle-edges), offsetting to endpapers. Covers a little rubbed, the hinges (internally) of Germinal are weak (but holding), and the head of the spine of La cure?e vol.I is torn and lifting. Bookplates of Joseph Henry Sterling. *** A very heavy set which will require substantial extra postage charges: please inquire for a quotation on postage to any part of the world. Very Good.
